  • General FAQ

A Retirement Residence (sometimes called a senior home) and a Long-Term Care Home (sometimes called a nursing home) are both places where communities of seniors live. A retirement residence is for seniors seeking an independent lifestyle with some level of personal care and support. A long-term care home is for seniors who require round-the-clock supervision and nursing care. Long-term care homes are subsidized by the provincial government and admission to a long-term care home requires a referral by a physician or government agency.

There are no specific visiting hours, however we encourage you to visit only when it is convenient for the resident.

The Baker Centre is pet-friendly. Pets are welcome to live in the Retirement Residence so long as their owner can take care of them. Pets are also welcome to accompany friends and family who are visiting the Long-Term Care Home. Some Baker Centre volunteers bring their therapy dogs on a regular basis to visit our residents.

There is no simple answer to this question. A retirement residence is for people who want to remain independent, but could use some help with daily personal and care needs. You choose your own meals and how you like to spend your time – whether it’s on your own or with other residents. You can take part in social activities, exercise classes, or outings. It’s all up to you.
